Spool Preparation

Meticulous preparation of the spools prior to coating is one area that sets Global Fusion apart from other coating processes.  To ensure Edge Coverage* a clean, properly prepared surface is essential to the protection properties of ScotchkoteTM 134.

Our technicians take pride in the quality of their work, and this includes removing any obvious sharp edges or root welds from each spool. Bringing those surfaces to a level consistent with the rest of the spool I.D. ensures that the coating will cure to a uniform surface throughout the interior of the spool.

Flange faces are chamfered back and rounded off so the coating will have a build-up on the edge, minimizing the chances of chipping the coating during pipeline installation.  Our Global Fusion belief is that this step in our process is vital to the longevity of the coating and to ensuring maximum corrosion protection for your pipeline.

We are proud to include this process in our services.

Blasting

Global Fusion has two climate controlled rooms where pipe spools are abrasion-blasted to a precise 2.5mil, white metal finish.  Global Fusion uses only steel grit for abrasion blasting.  This is superior to sand blasting in preventing contamination and is also an environmentally sound practice.  Blast media and compressed air purity tests are performed on a regular basis to further ensure that no contaminants are deposited on the pipe spools during our process.  Our blast room is reserved exclusively for blasting pipe spools.  Eliminating any other industrial applications significantly contributes to a contamination-free system.

Coating Application

ScotchkoteTM 134 is a fusion-bonded epoxy coating that starts in a powder form.  The powder is forced through custom-designed lance wands and distributed over the entire I.D. surface of the spool.  When applied to the preheated spool, the powder turns to a gel-like state and forms a uniform lining of the spool.

Once the process is complete the ScotchkoteTM 134 has formed a smooth, uniform, durable coating throughout the entire spool interior.  This coating has a proven performance record for corrosion resistance.

After cooling, the coating thickness is tested with a Posi Test Mil thickness gauge. Any anomalies or ‘holidays’ are repaired and the same spool is re-tested to ensure complete and uniform coverage is achieved.

Protection

Proven and Durable

Manufactured by 3M, ScotchkoteTM 134 Fusion Bonded Epoxy Coating is designed to provide corrosion protection of metal in harsh environments.  The epoxy is applied to preheated steel as a dry powder which melts to a gel and cures to a smooth, uniform coating thickness.  When applied to the interior of your pipe spools, the coating protects over a wide temperature range and provides excellent chemical resistance.

Quality Assurance and Compliance

Our goal is to surpass industry standards for quality assurance and compliance with documentation practices.  Global Fusion Quality Assurance Procedures are integrated into each step of the coating process.  From tagging all inventory upon delivery to final inspection of the interior coating thickness and continuity, each job is tracked and documentation is archived.  Strict maintenance schedules ensure that our facility is performing to highest efficiency so nothing stands in the way of on-time delivery and our exacting standards.
